Save your bloodwork and com - pare it over time so you can spot changes and have informed conversations with your doctor. Don't assume someone else is tracking every detail because you are your own best advocate. Over the years, treatment guidelines have changed, often leading to more prescriptions, especially for older adults. Many people feel that healthy lifestyle changes, such as improving diet, exercising, and reducing stress, are not discussed enough before medication is prescribed. While medications can be incredibly helpful, they should not always be the first choice when numbers are only slightly elevated. Years ago, when I was overweight, stressed, and eating poorly, my doctor recommend - ed blood pressure medication. Instead, I asked what changes I could make. After just one month of healthier habits, my numbers improved, and I never started the medication. Had I not asked, I might still be taking medi - cine while continuing those unhealthy choices. Of course, medications are sometimes neces- sary, especially when conditions are hereditary. Ask questions, involve your family, and work with your doctor to find the best path forward. I recommend MedlinePlus.gov for more infor- mation on these and other health topics. The Countdown to Fair Time Has Begun The countdown to The Best Ten Days of Fall has officially begun! Every Minute Counts: Building Routines That Help Children Thrive By Valerie Wallace As we begin a new school year, many families are adjusting to earlier mornings, new schedules, and busy routines. While this time of year can feel hectic, it also provides a wonderful opportunity to establish healthy habits that help children thrive. One of the most important things parents and caregivers can do is create consistent daily routines. Children feel more secure when they know what to expect. Regular bedtimes, family meals, reading together, and predictable morning routines help children develop confidence, independence, and the skills they need to be successful at home and in school. I often remind families that learning doesn't only happen in a classroom. Some of the best learning takes place during everyday moments. Reading a book before bed, talking about your day during dinner, counting objects while shopping, or taking a walk together all help build language, literacy, and problem-solving skills. These simple activities strengthen family connections while preparing children for lifelong learning. At the Partnership for Children of Wayne County, we are committed to helping every child enter school healthy, safe, and ready to succeed. We are honored to work alongside parents, educators, and community partners to provide resources and programs that support children from birth through age five. As we start this school year together, I encourage you to remember that every conversation, every hug, every bedtime story, and every shared mo- ment matter. Those small, consistent routines today help build confident, capable children tomorrow. Know Your Numbers and Ask Questions By Jessica Daly Keep Up The TURF Work! By Jeremiah Wright It's hard to believe we are into August! Summer feels like it's already trying to close the door with the kids going back to school, the summer vacations are fin- ished, but the heat is still blistering. While it seems like the grass will not quit growing the only thing to do is mow it. You would be surprised that August is an important month for turf care if you want to finish filling in those bare or thin spots and strengthen the roots before a harsh winter. Before you pull out the fertilizer bag and start spreading, first identify your grass type. If you have Bermuda, Zoysia, or St. Augustine then now is the time for your final nitrogen application of fertilizer on your turf. If it's Centipede stop and put down the bag of fertilizer. All four grass types listed still check for fungicide and pest damage. If you're still fighting fire ants, it is safe to apply an application for preventing and killing those pestering ants. So, while it might feel that sum- mer is over just remember to con- tinue to care for your grass so that you can continue to enjoy the warm nights with family and friends!
