August Gardening Tips August's summer heat makes gardening a challenge, but cooler mornings are the perfect time to prepare your garden and landscape for fall. Lawn Care • Late summer is the most effective time to control fire ants using baits. • This is the last month to fertilize Bermudagrass, St. Augustinegrass, and zoysiagrass (apply 1 pound of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet). Do not fertilize centipedegrass. Trees, Shrubs and Flowers • Stop pruning and fertilizing shrubs so they can safely acclimate for winter. • Cut back leggy annuals by one- third and apply a liquid fertilizer to trigger a fresh round of late-summer blooms. Fruit & Vegetables • Be on the lookout for pecan weevils emerging after early August rains. Drench trunks and lower limbs with insecticide (Sevin) to protect your harvest. • In late August, direct-sow salad greens like lettuce, spinach, and arugula.
