11 THE BUZZ AROUND WAYNE COUNTY MAY 2026 RAISE YOUR HAND By Juanita Curtis Raise your hand if you know someone who has been diagnosed with cancer. Raise your hand if you know someone who's had a heart attack, stroke or heart disease. Raise your hand if you know anyone who's been involved in any kind of accident. Most readers raised their hand at least once. Many of us raised our hand all three times. It's no surprise that Gallup News reported that Americans borrowed an estimated $74 billion for healthcare expenses in 2024 (and this is a modest estimate). There are two costs when dealing with any major accident or illness. The first is direct costs. These are covered by your major medical provider. Things like hospital charges and doctor's bills. The second is indirect cost. These are expenses that your major medical insurance will not cover because they weren't designed to. Things like lost income, mortgage, car payments, cell phones, utilities and basic living expenses. We can also include insurance limitations like deductibles, copayments, ambulances and other uncovered expenses. When we get sick or hurt, our balance of life is disrupted. This balance that we all work hard to perfect can be instantly (or in some cases slowly) ruined. What's missing for most working-class Americans is a benefit that will restore the balance while you're on the road to recovery. It's called supplemental insurance but I like to call it LIVING INSURANCE and it's worth looking into. By Jessica Daly I want to invite you to join me online! This all began with a simple but pow- erful push from a friend who told me I should start a pod- cast of my own, one where I could be honest, transparent, and truly help people improve their health and quality of life. What started as an idea quickly turned into something that is now a reality! "Your Daly Dose" is available on YouTube, Spotify, Amazon, and Apple, giving you the option to watch or simply listen, whatever fits your life best. The podcast is free and open to anyone looking for clear, relatable, and mean- ingful conversations about health. You will feel like we are sitting together chatting. I keep it comfortable and entertaining. Each episode blends real-life experience, true stories, and medical facts to make health infor- mation easier to understand and apply. Current topics include the impact of self-talk on your health, how to communicate effectively with your healthcare team, and my personal journey and how both my professional work and life experiences shaped this passion. At its core, "Your Daly Dose" is about con- nection, clarity, and empowerment. It's about meeting people where they are, breaking down complex information, and helping others feel more confident in their health decisions, one honest conversation at a time. Take Time to Care for Your Mind, Body, and Soul By Theresa Flynn MABC CPLC TAVI Coaching and Wellness LLC May is Mental Health Aware- ness Month. There is no shame in taking time to work on the quality of our mental health. Appreciating how faith affects the mind is important as well. There may just be a greater connection between mental, physical, and spiritual health than we realize. Many factors influence our mental health. Sometimes there are issues that require appro- priate medical care, but for many the pain of the past drives the mindset of the present. Unhealed wounds affect our mental health and relation- ships. And just as there is growing awareness of what to do to keep the body functioning well, we also should seek out techniques and commit- ments that can improve our mental health. In fact, one suggestion for better mental health is to take better care of our physical health! At our core, what we think affects how we feel. Our beliefs affect how we act and who we sur- round ourselves with. With the right attitude, we can do healthy things even if the world around us tempts us to do otherwise. It's no surprise that, as we take time in May to understand mental health, May 7 is also our National Day of Prayer. Believing in a Creator - in a source of hope and the power to change - this can do wonders for our mindset and our overall mental health. Take time to assess your mental health this month, and feel free to explore how faith might just change your mind. Here's The Deal "What you think and believe matters. It is what determines your decisions, your behavior, your speech and your overall view of life. Your beliefs also determine how you treat others. The question is; don't you want to have the RIGHT beliefs and thoughts? You may say, "I do." But, do you, really? There's an expression that says; "People act out what they believe." You see this every day. What are people around you saying and doing? They are saying and doing everything they think is "okay." Based on their beliefs. If someone lies and steals it's because they think and believe it is "okay" for them to do it. If someone gossips they believe it's "okay" to do so. If someone is plotting and scheming against someone, again, they think it's alright. Your thoughts and beliefs lead to action on your part. You must examine your thoughts all through the day. If they are wrong—you can quickly pray and say: "Lord I bring every thought captive unto you." Do it immediately. Put this into practice. The Lord will help you. Think on good things. 2 Corinthians 10:5 Isaiah 55:8 Proverbs 4:23-27 Mary Kay Best, Pastor The Church at Beston Your Daly Dose: Real Talk for Better Health Weekday Bible Study Sundays at 11:00 AM Fridays 9:30AM - 11:00 AM Mondays and Thursdays at 7AM 267.807.9601 Call In Number 644696# - Participant Code Sundays at 9:30 AM Wednesdays at 12Noon in Chapel Tuesdays at 7:00 PM April 7 - June 23 The Book of James Service Times Sunday Worship Service Women's Fellowship and Bible Study Prayer Line Sunday School First African Baptist Church Encouraging Hearts Changing Lives Saving Souls 803 Harris St. Goldsboro, NC 27530 www.fabnc.org
