Knelsen, MSW, LCSW Opening Doors Habitat Homeowners Open Doors for Others By Matthew Whittle In January when it looked like The Buzz was ending, I decided after nearly 10 years of monthly columns, to bring my "Our Habitat"seriesto a close. If you remember, the idea of "Our Habitat"was to encourage folks to think about how we are all more connected than we often think. My goal was to help expand the idea of Habitat for Humanity in Wayne County beyond building individual homes to building communities. And now we're doing that with our McNair Heights Neighborhood, which kicked off construction last month with a special wall-rais- ing ceremony. And as this project has begun, it's become clear that we're doing more than just building new foundations. We're opening doors. Now, I can't take credit for that idea. The theme of opening doors is one that Habitat affiliates across the country are reflecting on right now. But it is appropriate, and so we're beginning a new series both here and at www.habitatgoldsboro.org called,"Opening Doors." Of course, once the door is open our homeowners still have to walk through it if they want to build on the opportunity that lies on the other side. But in February something really cool happened. We had two homeowners, T'Sharra Williams of La- Grange and Andreta Wooten of Dudley, who decided they wanted to do more than just walk through that door. They wanted to hold it open even wider for future homeowners, and so they traveled with us to our annual Habitat on the Hill conference in Washing- ton, DC, and shared their stories with our Congressmen, advocating for policies and funding to help others build new futures and real generational change.
