march plant spotlight SAUCER MAGNOLIA March's plant spotlight is the Saucer Magnolia(Magnolia x soulangeana), a stunning hybrid deciduous tree that serves as a hallmark of the early spring season. Depending on how it is pruned, it can be grown as a large, multi-stemmed shrub or a small tree reaching 20 to 30 feet in height and width. This graceful specimen grows at a medium rate of about one foot per year, eventually developing a rounded, spreading canopy with low- reaching branches. One of its most striking features is its tendency to burst into bloom in late February or March well before its leaves emerge. The large, cup -shaped flowers are typically white with varying tints of pink and purple, depending on the specific cultivar.Because it blooms so early, the flowers are vulnerable to late winter or spring freezes. To protect your tree, avoid planting it in areas with southern exposures near buildings; these warmer spots can absorb and reradiate warmth, tricking the buds into opening too early and leaving them susceptible to frost damage. Saucer magnolia are relatively versatile, tolerating some partial shade, though they perform best and bloom most prolifically in full sun. They prefer consistent, regular moisture and flourish in well-drained, acidic soils. Given its dramatic floral display and attractive silver-gray bark, the Saucer Magnolia makes an excellent focal point or specimen plant for any North Carolina landscape. THE NEXT SWEET CHAPTER BUZZALICIOUS BEGINNINGS By Averil Williams Well… here we go! Hey Wayne County! I'm Averil and beyond excited to introduce myself as the new publisher and owner of The Buzz! First things first—huge, heartfelt thanks to Dan and Mary Wroblewski. They've poured their hearts into building The Buzz into something truly special. Because of them, this paper has been a staple in our community—and I'm so grateful they'll continue contributing to the magic. I love this community. The people. The small businesses. The Friday night lights. The front porch conversations. This place is home. Now I'm jumping into this new chapter with big vision and even bigger gratitude. We're going to honor the legacy of The Buzz—and take it to another level. But here's the secret ingredient: YOU! This is your paper. Built by you. Made for you. Supported by you. We are 100% local, spotlighting your achievements, cheering on your businesses, and keeping each other informed and inspired. And oh yes… we're going to have FUN. The much popular Speak Your Mind is still here, plus a brand-new interactive website is coming. Sweet surprises ahead! So if you see me around town, say HEY—I promise I'll say it back (probably loudly). So much to say, so little space…Wayne County—let's get buzzin'!
