16 THE BUZZ AROUND WAYNE COUNTY APRIL 2026 APRIL 30, 2026 She comes in early morning Her hunger to abate My lonely gray cardinal, She's very rarely late The feeders are always she knows, With lots of tempting treats. She flutters and she flitters, As she settles down to eat. The dogs pay her little mind, They've see. her here before But my lone gray cardinal, Far too pretty to ignore. The ground is cold with winters chill, The feed is cold and hard, She knows it's time to move along, The story has been told. My Lonely Gray Cardinal By Darryl Kilpatrick Opening Doors Holding the Door Open By Matthew Whittle Last month I gave a quick introduction to the new inspiration for this column. And as I've been thinking about this idea of opening doors, there are several images that come to mind, particularly one of a person holding a door open as someone else walks through. Sometimes the person is entering the door from just steps away. Sometimes they are coming from a long way off. Sometimes the person is empty-handed and moving quickly. And sometimes they are laden with bags and moving slowly. But in all of them the person holding the door is doing so without complaint and with a smile, knowing it costs them little to make life just a bit easier and better for the person coming behind them. And I think that's a great metaphor for what Habitat and our supporters do in this community. Some of our homeowner families are ready to step right through the door and seize their new opportunity. Others are coming from a little further away and need a bit more time and coaching before they are ready to step across that threshold. But they all know that door is going to stay open because our supporters are giving of their time, talent and treasure. And as we prepare to begin our new McNair Heights Neighborhood, we are thankful to all of those who are helping us hold open that door to new opportunities and better futures. Society has often said that women can't get along, we can't be friends. That we must view one another as threats instead of support, as competition instead of community. That narrative is false. This is what it looks like when women reject division, stand shoulder to shoulder and choose each other. We are better together. When we choose collaboration over competition, friendship over feuding and togetherness over division, there is an undeniable power we carry. No more shrinking. No more comparing. We will show up fully for ourselves and for one another. We are necessary to each other. This year's International Women's Day theme was "Give to Gain. " When women are supported, respected, and given space to lead..... EVERYONE WINS. Stronger families. Stronger communities. A stronger world. Inspirational women don't just exist in history books. They are all around us. So here's to every woman doing her thang. Keep making HERstory. Keep being bold. Keep being radical. Keep being a force to be reckoned with. BE YOU. And I'm inviting every woman to join me next year, Saturday, March 6, 2027 at 11AM on the steps of City Hall in Downtown Goldsboro as proof that…. YES WE CAN & YES WE WILL.
