Cooke brings a familiarity with the college, particularly the work of the Foundation of Wayne Community College, to the board. She served as a member of the Foundation board for seven years and director of its Arts and Humanities program from 2015 until joining the trustees. "My goal as a new member of the Board of Trustees is to work to support the mission of Wayne Community College, which has been instrumental in making significant educational and economic contributions to our community," Cooke said. "It is the board's responsibility to promote the policies that advance the good work being done by Wayne Community College." She was a career history teacher, working at Wayne Country Day School and high schools in Durham, North Carolina; California; and Georgia. As a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, Cooke has been a vestry member and served on the Community Soup Kitchen Board for more 10 years. She is currently part of the Outreach Committee and is involved in the Carver Heights Backpack Project. Cooke was appointed to the Board of Trustees by Gov. Roy Cooper. WayneCCTrusteeNieves1.jpg. You wouldn't take photos in the middle of an interstate, so why stand on railroad tracks to get that one shot? That's what the N.C. Department of Transportation's BeRailSafe program is asking people to consider, especially during prom season. Standing on or near railroad tracks is trespassing. "You put your life at risk by walking, playing or taking pictures on railroad tracks. It's not only dangerous, it is illegal," said Jason Orthner, director of NCDOT's Rail Division. "We need people to understand the real dangers of taking photos on railroad tracks." Spring is the season for graduations and prom portraits. NCDOT is working with the state Department of Public Instruction by asking high school yearbook staff advisers to alert students and photographers of how dangerous it is to take photos on or near railroad tracks. Last year, 18 people were killed, and 13 others injured, while trespassing on North Carolina railroad tracks. "Those are 18 people who will not be returning home to their families," added Orthner. "We want to remind everyone that these types of accidents are avoidable if you stay off and away from the tracks." NCDOT Trespassing on Railroads Can Have Deadly Consequences Photographers Urged to Not Take Prom Photos on Tracks During Prom Season Farm Credit Farmers Market Opening in April The Farm Credit Farmers Market will be opening for the 2019 season on April 11th.
