Slocumb Street, Goldsboro, NC 27530 NIA students holding positive autism trait posters during the opening ceremony at the 1st Annual Rockin' AWETISM® event. Rockin' AWETISM ® ! For many parents of special needs children, additional soft qualities in a school are essential in creating an environment where their child can let down their guard from the ongoing pressures of socializing and learning in a neurotypical world. It is the vision of New Independence Acad- emy (NIA), a private K-12 school located in Goldsboro, NC, to offer a conducive environment where children diagnosed with high functioning autism can thrive and not just survive. This element sets NIA apart from traditional schools as it allows students to socialize with peers who accept each other's unique qualities while different learning styles and abilities are nurtured at an educational level. NIA holds the largest annual autism acceptance event, Rockin' AWETISM®, in Wayne County each April which is National Autism Awareness Month. This annual event and the culture at NIA has helped reshape student's self-perceptions to those of self-acceptance, worthiness, and capable as this themed campaign focuses on the abilities of autism. This year's Rockin' AWETISM® event will be held at the Maxwell Center at 3114 Wayne Memorial Dr., Goldsboro on Satur- day, April 6th from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. In ad- dition to a Live auction starting at 12:00 and a Car and Truck Show organized by North Carolina Car Cruisers with registration between 9:00-11:00, there will be bounce houses, cornhole, food, and lots of family fun to be had.
