Downtown Goldsboro was recognized by the North Carolina Main Street Center for its efforts in innovation, rehabilitation and promoting public-private partnerships. Goldsboro was among fourteen com- munities to be presented awards by Chief Deputy Secretary for the NC Department of Commerce, Liz Crabill, and Assistant Secretary of Rural Economic Development Kenny Flowers. Awards categories included economic vitality, design, promotion and organization – the four points of the Main Street Approach™ to downtown revitaliza- tion. "We are pleased to recognize these important projects around the state. They demonstrate the kind of vision that local governments and their economic devel- opment partners, private developers and businesses owners, and private citizens have to improve their downtown districts and grow the local economy," said Kenny Flow- ers, Assistant Secretary for Rural Economic Development. DOWNTOWN GOLDSBORO WINS THREE AWARDS AT NC MAIN STREET CONFERENCE "This year's award-winning projects represent some of the state's best downtown revitalization success stories. The projects being recognized are notable building reha- bilitation projects, extraordinary public art projects, creative promotional activities, and public/private partnerships formed to make significant downtown changes and improve- ments", said Liz Parham, Director, NC Main Street & Rural Planning Center, part of the Rural Economic Development Division at NC Commerce. The North Carolina Main Street program helps small towns create vibrant central business districts by preserving their historic fabric and building on their unique characteristics using local resources. A panel of judges chose this year's award winners from more than thirty nominations submitted by Main Street communities throughout the state. Downtown Goldsboro received three awards out of five nomina- tions submitted. The following projects received Awards of Merit: Best Public-Private Partnership in Historic Rehabilitation – Made on Main Street One Main Financial, the National Main Street Center and the Goldsboro Main Street Program, which is comprised of the City of Goldsboro and Downtown Goldsboro De- velopment Corporation, were recognized. Made on Main in Goldsboro is the collec- tion of a multitude of valuable experiences that resulted in visible positive changes for our downtown. Grant funding from One Main Financial were used to solicit and pay artists to alter boring, inactive spaces, with six pedestrian crosswalk murals and two large facade murals, to enhance our local assets. The execution of these projects was celebrated with an all-inclusive, public event in April 2018. Best Historic Rehabilitation Project – 151 North Center Street David & Bethany Perry, Maurer Archi- tecture, Brock Construction and Perry Real Estate were recognized. This project overhauled a 9,300 square foot, historically- significant, two-story building on the corner of Mulberry Street and Center Street, which dates back to 1896 as Goldsboro's first hospital. The team created a large, subdi- vided retail space on the ground floor for the Downtown Pharmacy and the former Mulberry Marketplace, and constructed four luxury two-bedroom apartments on the second floor. The project created six full- time and part-time jobs, provided housing for eight additional downtown residents, and increased the tax value of the property by 600%. Best Adaptive Reuse Project – Old Golds- boro Fire Department Building Rescue David & Bethany Perry, Maurer Architec- ture, Brock Construction and the City of Goldsboro were recognized. 109 East Ash Street was the site of the Goldsboro Fire Department Headquarters in 1939. The historic building served the City until 1976. Forty years and numerous owners later, in 2016, David and Bethany Perry purchased the building and brought in David Maurer and Billy Brock to complete the design through the construction of the historic tax credit rehabilitation of the building. The 12,000 square foot Art Deco building was saved and now houses three businesses. The $1.3 million investment increased the tax value by more than 800% and created 10 full-time and part-time jobs to date. In addition to the three Awards of Merit, Bethany Mohr was named Goldsboro's 2018 North Carolina Main Street Cham- pion for her commitment to advocacy of downtown Goldsboro and her integral role in revitalization efforts in the area.
