He was born in November, the 11th month. His first and last name is comprised of 11 letters. And at age 11, he reached his nadir. As the 26-year-old # 1 ranked NFL tight end now dons a New Orleans Saints jersey, obvi- ously he overcame odds. But before he reached Louisiana, he resided in North Carolina. Jimmy Graham was born on November 24, 1986 and lived in Goldsboro for much of his childhood. He was normal as any other well-be- haved boy. What was abnormal was that at age 11, his mother dropped him off at a group home for orphans and juvenile delinquents, giving him up to the state. "I was placed at this long table with all these adults, and my mom just signs me away," said Jimmy wistfully. Jimmy, the young- est boy at the home, was left to fend for himself among crime- hardened teenagers who physically beat him. At his lowest ebb, Jimmy pined for normalcy. Eventually things looked Spotlight on New Orleans Saints' Former Goldsboro Resident Jimmy Graham: Triumphing from Defeat, to Taking a Place in NFL's Front Seat by Tonya M. Huffman up. Jimmy attended the Abundant Life Fellowship church and youth group volunteer Becky Vinson heard his cry. North Carolina's motto is "To be, rather than to seem," and rather than seem, a better life for Jimmy was meant to be. Vinson eventually became Jimmy's legal guardian. She earned her degree in nursing, and her ac- complishments motivated Jimmy. His grades improved. He played football and basketball. As a freshman, Jimmy attended Eastern Wayne in Goldsboro. As a sophomore and junior, he attended Community Christian in Wilson. He at- tended Charis Preparatory in Goldsboro as a senior and averaged 4.6 blocks, 13.8 rebounds, and 20.7 points. His trove of accolades included earning MVP. He accepted a basketball scholar- ship to the University of Miami. With the Miami Hurricanes, he appeared in 120 games with 39 starts, averaged 4.2 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 104 blocked shots. In 2009, Jimmy graduated with a double major in marketing and man- agement. He was honored by Help Charlie Find A Home! CHARLIE is a Poodle / Terrier mix looking for that special someone. Char- lie enjoys a good meal, long walks, car rides and engaging conversation…actu- ally Charlie is more of a listener. Although Charlie always appreciates a good belly rub, just being with you makes Charlie happy. Charlie is an older gentlemen, the vet estimates him to be between 8 and 10 years old, and he would like to live with a person who is also more mature. He would also prefer a home with no kids, but will welcome the attention of older children or grandchildren when they visit. Bottom line, Charlie wants someone all to himself...someone he can love and be loved by forever. Charlie has a big personality in a cute, 16 lb little body. Charlie is house-trained and crate-trained and walks well on a leash. He is fully vetted, neutered and on heart- worm prevention and flea control. He has a bit of arthritis in his back hips that is currently managed with diet and exercise. This dog is currently being fostered by Diamonds in the Ruff Canine Rescue. An application is required, along with a home visit and small adoption fee. * Fenced in yard is required.
