10 THE BUZZ AROUND WAYNE COUNTY JUNE 2026 The Gift of Ordinary Days By Kriquette Davis There's something about June that invites us to exhale. School schedules begin to loosen, gardens start showing off, and the long evenings remind us not every meaning- ful moment has to be planned. Sometimes the most important mem- ories are made in the ordinary parts of life. We live in a world that constantly pushes us toward bigger, faster, louder, and more productive. Yet some of the best parts of life still happen in simple ways: sitting on the porch listening to birds sing, sharing watermelon with family, waving at neighbors, or watching children chase fireflies until dark. Those moments may not seem extraordinary at the time, but they often become the memories we treasure most. June also reminds us how quickly seasons change. The little things we sometimes rush past today may become the things we miss tomorrow. The laughter around a supper table, the smell of fresh-cut grass, homemade ice cream, and time spent with people we love are gifts we should never take for granted. Many of us spend too much time worrying about what's next instead of appreciating what is right in front of us. Life becomes richer when we slow down enough to notice it. Joy is not always found in grand vacations or expensive plans. Often, it's tucked inside everyday moments we almost overlook. As summer begins, maybe the best thing we can do is give ourselves permission to be present. Put the phone down occasionally. Watch a sunset. Call someone you've been meaning to check on. Laugh more. Worry less. These ordinary June days are part of the beautiful story of our lives, and one day we may realize they were never ordinary at all. As Psalm 118:24 reminds us, "This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it." Sometimes the holiest thing we can do is simply slow down enough to appreciate the gift of today. CHOOSE YOU! By Tiffany Compton,MA, LCMHCS,LCAS-A It's completely normal to feel em- barrassed, ashamed, or even guilty when thinking about starting mental health counseling. These feelings are often rooted in stigmas; beliefs like "therapy means you're weak," or "only 'crazy' people need help." In truth, counseling can be incredibly valuable. It offers a safe, supportive space to process emotions, recognize patterns in how you relate to yourself and others, strengthen communication, work through past experiences or trauma, and build confidence; among many other benefits! In my work as a clinician, I've had many adults finish a session and say, "That wasn't what I ex- pected at all." I always affirm their reactions and explain that therapy rarely resembles what we see on television. You've likely come across the stereotype; a client lying on a couch, pouring out their emotions while the therapist quietly nods and scribbles notes. That's not an accurate picture of what therapy is really like! Therapy is a space where you can show up exactly as you are, without judgment, and feel supported as you explore your identity and experiences. Along the way, you may gain new insights about yourself that you hadn't considered before. Give yourself permission to try, to get cu- rious about your story, and to begin healing from what no longer serves you. I truly believe therapy is one of the most meaningful gifts you can give yourself! We spend so much time prioritizing others; it's okay to decide to choose you! Equipped For The Journey By Ryan Lane This fall, my son begins a new chapter in life af- ter being accepted to North Carolina State University. As a family, we are excited, deep- ly thankful, and blessed. But like many students entering a new place, there is also uncertainty. New surroundings, unfamiliar faces, and great- er expectations can feel overwhelming. That reminded me of an important spiri- tual truth: God never calls us as believers into a new season without equipping us for it. In 1 Corinthians 12, the Bible teaches that God gives believers spiritual gifts such as wisdom, encouragement, leadership, service, and teaching. These gifts are not random. They are given so we can fulfill God's purpose wherever He places us. Whether starting college, a new job, or walking through a difficult season, fear often says, "You are not ready." But God's Spirit reminds us that He provides what we need for the journey ahead. Like a new student entering college with new books or the latest computer, God will provide what you need if you trust Him. If you are entering a new season in life, seek God through prayer, follow the guid- ance of His Spirit, and trust that He has already equipped you with gifts to serve Him faithfully. It was he who remained many years Working with father in the fields Father was excited to have both sons All should rejoice, join in, and have fun Parable Christ explained to and Pharisees First Presbyterian Church of Goldsboro is now registering youth and volunteers for its 2026 Vacation Bible School to be held in June. The school, themed "Emerald Crossing," promises a "journey through Ireland, where Psalm 23 comes to life and kids will explore God as shepherd, guide, comforter, provider, and king through David's story, hands-on activities, and apologetics." It is for students 4 years old through rising sixth graders. Sessions are scheduled for Sunday, June 14 through Thursday, June 18 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Participants are also invited to a family dinner at the church at 5:30 each evening.
