JUNE plant spotlight PENTAS June's plant spotlight is Pentas (Pentas lanceolata), also known as Egyptian star flowers. If you need a tough, showy summer annual for containers or garden beds, Pentas are an excellent choice. They feature dense, three-inch clusters of star-shaped flowers in red, pink, purple, and white. These resilient plants shrug off intense heat and drought, boast excellent deer resistance, and are magnets for hummingbirds and butterflies. Several great varieties are available, including the dark-leafed Graffiti® series, the compact Lucky Star® series, and the pollinator-loving ButterflyTM series. Pentas thrive in full sun and reach a manageable one to two feet tall and wide, making them perfect 'fillers' for mixed patio pots or dramatic mass plantings. While they are incredibly low maintenance once established, just keep a casual eye out for common summer pests like spider mites and aphids. With minimal care, Pentas will keep your landscape vibrant and buzzing with life all summer long.
