Progress make it possible for OFHR to provide fans to Wayne County Seniors at no cost that have a home situation where a threat to health and well-being exists. Fans are very limited through this funding. However, the Peggy Seegars Senior Center will gladly accept donated new fans or monetary donations to buy fans to distribute to seniors in need. For more information, you may contact Natasha Artis at 919-731-1608. 6 THE BUZZ AROUND WAYNE COUNTY June 2024 Wayne County Services on Aging/Peggy Seegars Senior Center PSA The Senior Center is for Wayne County citizens aged 60 years and older. You must be a member of the Senior Center to participate in activities and events unless otherwise noted differently. Member sign-ups are on Tuesday and Thursday at 1:00pm. Call the Center at 919-731-1591 to ensure staff is available, for sign-ups, before arriving at the Center. Contact Paula Edwards @ 919-705-1785 or Lisa Weston@ 919-731-1589 CLOSED- Thursday, July 4, 2024, for Independence Day COMMUNITY CPR-UNC NAVIGATORS/ PARAMEDICS Learn and practice basic lifesaving skills in less than an hour. This class is for seniors who want to have a basic knowledge of CPR, this class does not certify people to perform CPR. You will learn Hands-On Only CPR for Early Heart Attack care. Class will be held in the Meal Site on Wednesday, June 12 at 12:30pm. ELDER ABUSE. FRAUD, AND SCAM AWARENESS SYMPOSIUM This symposium on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, from 9:00am to 12:30pm will focus on topics relevant to protecting Wayne County seniors and will feature key speakers. The event is free and open to the public and professionals with advance registration REQUIRED by June 17, call Lisa Weston @ 919-731-1589. Symposium topics will include presentations by the Department of Social Services, Adult Protective Services; the Wayne County Sheriff's Department, and John Maron, Director, Investor Protection and Education Services Program with the N.C. Department of the Secretary of State Securities Division. Also, N.C. Department of Justice, Regional Ombudsman, and SHIIP will have representatives and information available. AMIGO BINGO Do you know a little Spanish? Would you like to build on your Spanish vocabulary? Let's play AMIGO bingo on Tuesday, June 11th & 18th at 10:30am. Improve your knowledge on names of colors, numbers, and various everyday Spanish vocabulary words. CRAFTING WITH VIVIAN & TONYA Craft painting is fun, relaxing, and inspiring. Projects will include painting wood, rocks, ceramics, and mugs. Our volunteers will assist you in your creation, help guide you when you feel stuck and make suggestions that will make the experience a memorable time as you create your own personal work of art. Classes are held on Tuesday, June 11th, and July 2nd, from 10:30 to noon. Space is limited and registration is required, call 919-731-1589 to reserve your spot. INDEPENDENCE DAY ICE CREAM SOCIAL July 3rd Celebrate July 4th. Join us for fun and fellowship on Friday, July 3rd for an Ice Cream Social at 12:00 noon. We would love to see you for Ice Cream and all the toppings! BEGINNER COMPUTER CLASS Beginner computer class with Paula Reich starts Monday, June 3rd, 10:30am to noon and runs for 8 weeks. SCRAPBOOKING CLASS - June 13, 2024 Scrapbooking is a fun and creative activity to document memories, save souvenirs and channel your inner artist. If you have never tried your hand at making one, we have a group of scrapbookers who would love to show you how. Our Scrapbooking Class is held on the 2nd Thursday of each month from 10am- noon. You will need some supplies: glue, tape, scissors, and photos you may want to work with or magazines, a scrapbook, and stickers. FREE & OPEN TO THE PUBLIC: CAREGIVER CLASS: TOPIC- COMMUNICATION WITH DEMENTIA Monday, June 24, 2024—5:30pm Therapeutic Alternatives Mental Health Specialty Team is offering a monthly education series designed to provide information for individuals providing care and support for a friend or family member or have an interest in the geriatric population. The program's goal is to strengthen your skills and resilience and bolster the ability to nurture and support those for whom you care. A one-hour continuing education certificate will be available for each participant. Class may be attended in-person or on Zoom. There is no charge or age requirement for this class. OPERATION FAN HEAT RELIEF Operation Fan Heat Relief (OFHR) is a summer program intended to provide a more comfortable living environment and to reduce heat related illnesses. Summertime can be a difficult and dangerous time for our seniors in Wayne County especially when they do not have a means to keep their homes cool.
