Phillips, was one of 20 honorees from across the state recognized in a ceremony held at the North Carolina Museum of History in Raleigh on May 6, 2024. She was presented with the award's signature medallion, pin, and certificate by the North Carolina Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service Chair Rev. Dr. Joe Blosser, Executive Director S. Briles Johnson, and Volunteerism Coordina- tor Kenneth McLellan. The Medallion Award was introduced in 2006 to recognize the top volunteers in the state. The award certificate, signed by Gov. Roy Cooper, denotes recognition and "appre- ciation for distinguished volunteer service to the people and the State of North Carolina." One Medallion Award nomination is permitted per county. A statewide panel reviews and evaluates the nominations to choose 20-25 award recipients. Phillips was selected as Wayne County's nominee from those honored with the Gover- nor's Volunteer Service Awards in April. During the Medallion ceremony, Blosser emphasized that the recipients are "people who really know the community." They are "people that see the depth of commitment and the work that we all have to do cooperatively," he said. "Together, we are building a move- ment for service … we are a strong state when we serve together," Blosser said. "You are our North Star here in our great North State." UNC Health Wayne Earns an Unprecedented 6th Consecutive 'A' Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group New Grade for Spring 2024 is a national recognition for patient safety UNC Health Wayne has earned its 6th consecutive "A" Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit watchdog. Leapfrog assigns an "A," "B," "C," "D" or "F" grade to general hospitals across the country based on over 30 measures of errors, accidents, injuries and infections as well as the systems hospitals have in place to prevent them. "We are thrilled to share that UNC Health Wayne has once again earned an 'A' rating from the Leapfrog Group for the 6th consecutive time" says Jessie L. Tucker, III, President and CEO at UNC Health Wayne. "This 6th 'A' and our 4-star rating from the Centers of Medicare and Medicaid services demonstrates our teams unwavering dedica- tion to improving the care we provide. I'm incredibly proud of our teammates and the exceptional care they deliver every day". "Upholding superior patient safety and quality is a team effort, involving every department and teammate at UNC Health Wayne", says Vice President of Medical Affairs and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Brian Fillipo, MMM, FACP. "Receiving an 'A' rating from the Leapfrog Group for the 6th time reflects our ongoing commitment to adopting best practices and rigorous protocols, ensur- ing the safety and well-being of every patient who entrusts us with their care." Community Effort Notable Despite Setbacks in 2024 Stamp Out Hunger The annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, organized by the National Association of Letter Carriers, faced hurdles this year, gathering only 9,760 and not meeting the set goal of 15,000 pounds. Despite not reaching the target, the dedication and community spirit were evident, with residents contributing by leaving donations at their mailboxes or designated drop-off points at the Berkeley and Downtown Post Offices. The drive saw participation from volunteers across the community, including individuals from Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, UNC Health Wayne, and various local organizations who played a vital role in the collection, loading, and distribution of the donations. Continued support came from local contributors such as Bekins Moving Solutions, UNC Health Wayne, and food donations from Krispy Kreme, Dunkin on Berkeley Blvd., and Panera Bread, showcasing strong community ties and ongoing commitment to helping those in need. This year's beneficiaries included The Community Soup Kitchen, The Salvation Army, HGDC Community Crisis Center, Hydrant Church, The Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority's child hunger initiative, and Pete Norris Ministries. Over fifty volunteers served 271 hours cumulatively, and the food drive is estimated to provide meals or food boxes to over 3,000 families facing food insecurity in Wayne County. Residents who were not able to participate on Saturday but want to donate may do so until Saturday, May 25, 2024, by dropping off their donations in bins located in the lobbies of the Downtown Post Office and Berkeley Post Office. WCC's Military Business Center Helps Secure Millions in Federal Contracts GOLDSBORO, N.C. – The North Car- olina Military Business Center (NCMBC) at Wayne Community College has helped in awarding $115,796,725.31 in federal con- tracting for fiscal year 2023 in Wayne County. The NCMBC is a business development entity of the NC Community College Sys- tem and is part of the Workforce Continuing Education Services division at WCC. Its goal is to leverage military and other federal business opportunities to expand the economy and improve the quality of life in NC. WCC Military Business Center Regional Program Manager Bill Simons identifies federal contracting opportunities for businesses in the state. Simons connects government contracts with businesses in Wayne County, which con- tributed to over $115 million awarded from Seymour Johnson Air Force Base and other small federal agencies in the county. "Seymour Johnson Air Force Base is awarding a lot of money to businesses that generate revenue and improve the quality of life for people who live and work in Wayne County because a lot of that money stays in Wayne County," Simons explained. "If a company is awarded a contract and I helped them connect with the government, that's a win for Wayne Community College and the North Carolina Military Business Cen- ter," he said. For more information on the NCMBC, visit WCC's website.
