The college's "Home Grown Science in NC" event will allow the whole family to participate in short experiments and view displays that celebrate science and things made and grown in North Carolina. The free carnival-style event will be held 10 a.m.-1 p.m., Saturday, April 13 in the Wayne Learning Center Atrium and the grounds around the building. WCC Biology Instructor Sondi Hoffman, the event's organizer, said that science will be incorporated throughout the festival in fun ways. Attendees will visit stations that provide a variety of hands-on experiments and displays. Activities include meeting and interacting with local beekeepers, participating in the making of Mentos geysers, and touching real NC fossils. Participants can also learn about diverse organisms that are all "made in NC," extract DNA from NC grown strawberries, and grow their own NC plant. Since NC is "first in flight," visitors can try their hand at making and flying paper airplanes. The college's fair is an official event of the 2019 North Carolina Science Festival with its theme of "Made in North Carolina." It is one of hundreds of events showcasing STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) activities being held across the state during the month of April. To find locations of other events, go to www. ncsciencefestival.org/find-events. Founded in 2010, the North Carolina Science Festival is the first statewide science festival in the United States. Through a series of community-based events each April (hosted by schools, colleges, libraries, museums, parks, businesses and other local organizations), the Festival celebrates the economic, educational, and cultural impact of science in North Carolina. The Festival is presented by the Biogen Foundation and produced by Morehead Planetarium and Science Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. WCC Festival To Give Families Homegrown Science Fun WCPS to Hold Kindergarten Pre-Registration Wayne County Public Schools will hold its Kindergarten Pre-Registration Day, Thursday, April 18, at all 14 elementary schools. Pre- registration will last from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. "Our schools look forward to being able to welcome families and assist them with the first steps in enrolling their child," states Dr. Carol Artis, Executive Director of Curriculum & Instruction and Federal Programs. "Enrolling a child in Kindergarten is always an exciting time for a family. We highly encourage parents or guardians to bring their child with them to Kindergarten Pre-Registration Day to meet with teachers and school staff. Families can also pick up and complete any required paperwork." A child must be five years old on or before August 31 to register for kindergarten for the coming year. Parents/Legal guardians must present an official birth certificate and immunization records to school officials. Birth certificates may be obtained from the Register of Deeds office in the county of the child's birth. Parents/guardians must also show "proof of residence." To enroll a child, parents must present two sources of documentation such as utility bills, tax bills, deed of trust, rent receipt, or any document which clearly proves current resident status. Military families living on base may present a letter from base housing as proof of residence. Parents must enroll their kindergarten child in the school district in which they live. North Carolina law requires that each kindergarten child receive a health assessment and his/her shots. The health assessment must be documented on an official North Carolina Health Assessment Report form, which is available through the school district, the Wayne County Health Department, and most pediatricians' offices. If needed, parents/legal guardians will be given a health assessment form during registration which must be completed by the family physician and returned to the school by the first day of classes on Monday, August 27. Parents/guardians can go to the district website at www.waynecountyschools. org to see a complete list of enrollment requirements, as well as find the school their child will attend. Anyone unable to register their child on the designated day is encouraged to contact the school in their attendance area. Parents/ guardians unsure of the school their child will attend should call the district administrative offices at 919-731-5900, stop by the administrative offices at 2001 East Royall Avenue, or go to the district website at www. waynecountyschools.org.
