Deltas, Putting Their "hearts" Into Service Goldsboro Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. sponsored their annual "Heart Healthy Walk" at Berkeley Mall on February 16th. Over 100 walkers came out to hike around the mall in celebration of Heart Month, with Deltas making up over 35 Aidan's Sweets Eleven-year-old Aidan Honeycutt, an aspiring pastry chef and proprietor of Aidan's Sweets, recommends his "scratch-made" cheesecakes to patrons visiting the Curb-Side Sale at the Goldsboro Maxwell Center on Friday afternoons from 3-6pm. "I've known I wanted to be a chef since I was three years old. I love food and I love creating and baking sweets for people," said Aidan. A few years ago, he entered a cheesecake in a 4-H Favorite Foods show and placed second. Ever since that contest, he has tried and tweaked different recipes and has come up with what he describes as the "perfect cheesecake." To date, Aidan has made "perfectly plain," chocolate ganache, key lime, reduced fat and sugar lemon, mango topped, blueberry topped, and strawberry topped 4-inch and 9-inch cheesecakes. Upon request, he will also make a vegan cheesecake. He says the money he makes from sales goes directly back into his business so he can purchase ingredients for his next batches. He is also already saving money for culinary school. He wants to attend either The Culinary Institute of America or the French Pastry School in New Orleans. Also, if you visit his table, you will notice a carafe that he is using to collect money for the Goldsboro chapter of Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, which helps feed and clothe those who are in need. Aidan takes custom cheesecake orders in person, by phone, and through social media. His fans can keep up with him through Aidan's Sweets Facebook and Instagram pages that his mom manages at https://www.facebook.com/ aidanssweets/, by calling 919-709-5596 or email at aidanssweets@gmail.com. of the walkers. Deltas provided a treat bag of healthy snacks, water, and literature with tips for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The trophy for the organization with the greatest number of participants went to the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, who also won last year. The individuals bringing the greatest number of participants were Shamika Howell, Rene Hall, and Scholarship Contestant Shamiya Mewborn. Deltas also sponsored an Estate Planning Seminar at the Family Y on February 20, 2019. Around 20 people attended, mostly seniors. The Seminar was presented by Attorney Natarlin Best and Attorney Trevoria L. Jackson of Best Lawrence Law, P.A. of Rocky Mount, NC. The presentation was well received and judging from the number of questions, very worthwhile. A light lunch was provided by the sorority. The Deltas partnered with the City of Goldsboro, The MAAT TEAM Re/Max Complete, and NU Hope Community Development to sponsor a seminar for First Time Homebuyers on March 9th at the W.A. Foster Center at 10:00 AM. The event was well attended with over 50 participants for the morning session, and 26 staying for the complete program. If you find it in your "heart" to care for somebody else, you will have succeeded. (Maya Angelou) Kates Promoted to Captain On Thursday, February 28, 2019 at 4:30 pm, Sheriff Larry Pierce held a badge presentation and promotional ceremony in Courtroom #5. The ceremony was opened with a word of prayer and then the Pledge of Allegiance. Sheriff Pierce then spoke about the years of service that Lt. William Kates had in law enforcement. Most of his career with the Wayne County Sheriff's Office has been working as a School Resource Officer and moving up through the ranks in this division. After the words by Sheriff Pierce, he then promoted Lt. Kates to Captain and presented him his Captain's badge. Captain Kates began his new supervisory duties commanding the School Resource Officers (SRO) division on Friday, March 1, 2019. Sheriff Pierce saw the need for the SRO Officer division to have its own Captain due to the size of this division. Currently, there are 19 full time and four part time SRO's. With this promotion, Capt. Kates will command four supervisors who oversee the daily operation of the division. With his promotion, Captain Kates becomes a member of the Sheriff's command staff which consists of the Sheriff, Major of Enforcement, Major of Detention/Civil, Captain of Civil Division, Captain of Detective Division, Captain of Patrol Division, Captain of Support Services, Captain of Detention and now Captain of SRO's. As part his duties being a member of the command staff, Captain Kates will participate in personnel and budget decisions for the Office.
